Royal Remonstration, Part One
In this Special Guest Post, local artist Ed Mills documents the Newark, Delaware No Kings In America Peaceful Protest
The June 14, 2025 Newark, Delaware Indivisible event was BIG — bigger than ever and Ed Mills reflected the vibrant spirit of it all with many great pictures. As one protestor’s sign proclaimed, “WE ARE A VERY BIG FORCE” and Ed’s photos reflect that reality along with the recent news that perhaps as many as 11 million protestors turned out for events across America on this historical occasion. Ed’s lifelong interest in illustration and photography was formalized at the University of Delaware where he studied graphic design. During a 30-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, Ed became a strong labor advocate and applied his creative skills designing logos, banners and promotional materials for the American Postal Workers Union, such as the poster featured below that he produced for the organization’s 100th Anniversary.
After he retired, alarmed by the fascist direction our country was taking, Ed attended his first protest at the initial “Hands Off” Rally organized in Newark by Indivisible at Old College early this Spring. “I’ve been proudly making my voice heard ever since,” says Mills.
In addition to his photographic contributions to the pro-democracy movement, Ed has designed signs for the protests, including the masterpiece below which I photographed at a previous event. Ed told me he wanted to create a poster that would distill Trumps twisted MAGA cult into its essence, and felt that no phrase better defined this than the Orwellian, “Truth is treason in an empire of lies.”
“In creating this poster, I searched for the most obnoxious Trump image I could find,” says Mills, “and assembled a wall of them to symbolize his endless verbal assaults on reality and decency. Finally, I added individual vignettes to each portrait to emphasize Trump’s vile mouth and make the piece less Warhol and more ‘Madman Ranting Out of a Dark Box of Hate.’”
